With a fairly large cult following, Dave’s Gourmet has a reputation for some pretty tasty and extremely hot sauces, this being one of them. Hiding behind the classic Dave’s label, the sauce has a nice, dark red tint. It,s a little on the thin side, so be careful with your pour.
Consisting of an almost overwhelming Naga taste and bit of fruity flavor, this is a great “once in a while” sauce to me. I definitely will not be eating this on every taco.
If you’ve tried this sauce, we’d love to hear what you think in the comments below!
You don’t have to hold it too close to your nose. It’s a very aromatic sauce shooting a very pungent, vinegary smell straight into your nostrils. It smells like it’s going to burn. The “INSANE ++” heat rating on the side of the bottle is probably a solid indicator as well.
Like most sauces with extracts, I wasn’t expecting much as far as flavor. like the smell, it’s very vinegary. You are hit with a fairly tart, sweet(ish) flavor that is easily overpowered by the vinegar. The burn sets in almost instantly, slowly building as it simmers away at your taste buds. After about 15 seconds, the burn really sets in and has covered the entirety of your tongue. The heat doesn’t seem to wander off too far from there.
Just like it says on the bottle, “So Hot It’s Spooky”. While it’s not the hottest sauce out there, it still has a really good burn. It won’t completely take over your throat, but will render your tongue useless for several minutes. At first you will feel fine, a medium heat starts to build, but in true Naga passion, the heat continues to build and build till just about the point you think it’s going to stop. Then it keeps building.
“So hot it’s spooky” slightly hotter than “the new hottest sauce in the universe” (ultimate insanity). This sauce is distinctive for the sweet fruity flavor that sits over the top of the sauce’s heat. Shake well and refrigerate after opening.
Overall I love this sauce. It’s great on everything so far and it’s hard to get tired of. Yeah, I got the bottle today, but it’s already half gone. Granted, they could be a little lighter on the vinegar, but overall it’s a great sauce at a great price and goes great on just about everything. So overall it’s just great, not the best, but great!
