One of my all time favorite hot sauce brands, Marie Sharp’s is doing something right down there in Belize. They have been for a long time. After a couple years with various types of Marie Sharp’s on my shelf, I had yet to try their green Habanero sauce.
What really piqued my interest is the odd combination of Nopal Prickly Pears and peppers. You’re probably wondering, what the hell is Nopal? Well, it’s a type of cactus that grows predominately in Mexico but can be found throughout Central America.
First Impressions
Being the only green sauce on their product line, this one stands out from other Marie Sharp’s hot sauces. It is rather thick with a great texture, but takes a little coercing to get it out of the bottle.
Taste & Smell
Upon opening the bottle, your invited with a very mild, vinegary aroma. With the first taste, this sauce has a very natural, vegetable-ish flavor with a bit of sweet and tang. It literally tastes green. Since I’ve never tried Nopal, I can’t really gauge it’s impact on the sauce’s flavor, but I’m assuming that this is what gives it the sweet and tangy taste. With mild notes of garlic and onion, this sauce would pair well with just about anything, especially poultry or fish tacos.
Heat
For a Habanero sauce, this one is pretty mild. Don’t get me wrong, it has a great burn, but it could be hotter. The fiery “Hot” symbols on the label are a little misleading here.
Overall It’s A Great Sauce
Overall this is a great sauce and deserves a spot on your hot sauce rack. It’s unique combination of cacti and peppers offer a well rounded flavor and would be a great companion for your culinary endeavors.
If you’re a fan of green or “verde” sauces, you should definitely give this one a try. If you’ve tried it already, let us know what you think in the comments below!
