I recently purchased a bottle of Sontava Habanero XX Hot Sauce. I was attracted by it’s sunny color, and the note that said ‘Product of Belize.’ That’s the part that got me.
I had a Supervisor some time ago that, almost daily, he would tell anyone that would listen, ‘One day I’m gonna retire to Belize! It’s beautiful down there!’ I figured that any hot sauce made with Habaneros grown nearer the equator, I have to try!
This sauce doesn’t disappoint. Made with Habaneros, garlic, vinegar and lime juice, it had a light flavor, although a bit heavy on the vinegar. The surprise was that they added carrot. I thought it might just have been for color, but you can actually taste the carrot in the sauce. It also adds substance since it’s still so what chunky.
For a sauce that says ‘Habanero’ and ‘XX Hot’ I have to say it was not as hot as one might think. I only gave it a 5 for heat, but it earned an 8 for flavor. This sauce would be best used in a salsa, I think. I could also see it being great on chicken or vegetables. A great one to try one summer day!
