A while back I went on a Sriracha hunt, finding every brand I could and then “wishlisting” them so that I could slowly start to try them. So when my wife said “honey, I need something for about $7 so I can get free shipping” I jumped on the chance to order this stuff.
First Impressions
Without reading the bottle you instantly know this is a Sriracha type sauce. From the reddish orange color to the bottle, it just screams SRIRACHA! Once I take a whiff of it though I can tell that this won’t be your standard garlic and pepper, pungent Sriracha.
Taste
This sauce is delicious! The flavor is very bright and pleasantly citrusy. The yuzu flavor is the star of this sauce with the red pepper being more of an accent flavor. I’ve tried it on simple buttered noodles and on lemon pepper chicken and it was perfect. This sauce would also pair well with seafood, pork, veggies and probably with good, smoky bbq food. This would also be a great addition to a marinade or salad dressing…or mayo dips etc. However, I wouldn’t put this on regular pizza. I would try it on barbecue chicken pizza or even a pizza with a white sauce, just not your standard pepperoni and sausage pizza.
Heat
There’s not much to say about this heat, it’s your basic Sriracha heat. It might even be slightly less spicy then that. All that means to me though is that I can put more of it on my food at one time and get more of this tasty goodness.
Final Thoughts
It is sauces like this that are quickly turning me into a Sriracha blasphemer. With a few exceptions, such as with pizza, I’m going to reach for this sauce before the beloved Rooster sauce. Honestly, I now reach for Trader Joe’s Sriracha before Huy Fong too and I know a couple guys that do so too. The bright, fresh and citrusy flavor of Yuzu Pao is a welcome change to the straight forward, in your face pepper and garlic sauces that have become stereotypically standard in today’s hot sauce market. There’s nothing wrong with those and I have a shelf on the door of my fridge that’s loaded with those sauces, but I would bet money that this one will be finished before any of those ones are.
